What is Swedish Massage ? Swedish massage is considered to be the standard western style of therapeutic manipulation of the soft tissues of the body. Originally developed by the Swedish fencing master and gymnastic teacher Pehr Henrik Ling in the late 1700’s, it was further developed by a Dutch practioner, Johan Georg Mezger. Natural oils, cream or talc are used with a variety of massage techniques and pressures aimed at improving health and well being. The positive effects of massage can be felt on all levels, physically, mentally and emotionally. What are the benefits? Relieves muscular tension What does a massage involve? A Swedish massage treatment can be booked for an hour or a half hour. An hour’s massage will normally cover all four limbs and the back, shoulders and neck. A half hour massage often involves the neck, back and shoulders only, but can be adapted for your individual needs. On your first visit, a fifteen minute consultation will be necessary to ensure an appropriate and safe treatment. For a full body massage the removal of most of your clothing is necessary. However, your dignity is preserved at all times with the use of carefully placed towels, which will cover everything but the area being worked on. The massage will probably start with you laying on your back, on a couch and at some point you will be asked to turn over. Your comfort and well being will be the therapist’s priority. |
